Fifth Grade Classroom
My name is Mrs. Carberry and I am so thrilled to
welcome back our returning Holy Name of Mary students into fifth grade! I also want to extend a warm welcome to our new students! I cannot wait to get to know all of you. This year, you are going to learn and grow in incredible ways! I look forward to seeing all of you reach for your goals and succeed! Most of all, I can't wait to celebrate each student's uniqueness and God given talents that make all of you so amazing! I will see you in class!
May Class Update
ELA
In 5th grade we will continue to read the novelBridge to Terabithia. Students will analyze plot, theme, and character using the novel. We will continue utilizing the R.A.C.E writing strategy in both short and long response questions. We will continue to improve reading comprehension skills with I-Ready and incorporate those skills into class instruction. Lastly, we will continue to acquire English skills as we practice grammar, vocabulary and punctuation skills.
In 6th grade we will expand on developing our thoughts in writing and will analyze the language of texts involved in Close Reading. Students are reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and using their reading skills to analyze this classic story. In addition, we will continue to respond to short-response questions by fousing on text evidence and utilizing the R.A.C.E writing strategy and develop arguments.
Social Studies News
In 5th grade we are examining America's most important documents, The Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Students are learning about the events that led to our Founding Fathers
in 6th grade students will be traveling back in time to Ancient Greece. Studnts will learn about the legacy of the philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. They will discover that the roots of our government came from the City-State of Athens as well as learn about some Greek myths.
Religion News
Jesus said, "I tell you, in just thte same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance" (Luke 15: 2-7). Our fifth graders are focused on this special verse as they continue to learn about their the Sacraments of Healing. Students will explore why Reconcilation and Penance are a celebration within the Church and that God loves us so much he rejoices when we confess our sins and want to strengthen our relationship with him.
